Bachelors out there do you want to try an easy and quick sambar recipe? This is one of the easiest way to make sambar. When my mother first thought me first to make sambar, there was so many steps involved. Eventually I started reducing the steps and finally arrived at the simplest way to make sambar without compromising on the taste π
You can have this with masala dosa, uttappam or any dosa of your choice.
Sambar Recipe
Ingredients:
- Toor Dal β ΒΎ cup
- Onion β 1 small
- Potato β 2 medium
- Carrot β 1 small
- Drumstick – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Chilli powder β 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder β Β½ tsp
- Coriander powder β 2 tsp
- Sambar powder β 2 tsp
- Water β 3 cup
- Asafoetida (kayam) β 1/3 tsp
- Tamarind β small ball (lemon size)
- Salt
For Tempering
- Mustard seeds β Β½ tsp
- Oil β 4 tbsp
- Curry leaves
- Dry red chillies – 4
Method:
- Cut all the vegetables into medium-sized pieces. Soak tamarind in ΒΌ cup of water for some time. Squeeze and take the extract from it.
- Wash dal and take it in a cooker. (If you want the dal to be cooked really well, soak dal in water for one or two hours)

- Add vegetables to the cooker. Add water and salt and mix well.
- Pressure cook the same. ( I go for 2 whistles and immediately remove the cooker from stove. Open cooker once steam goes completely)
- Now bring it to boil again, add all the masala, tamarind extract, kayam and allow it to boil for another 2-3 min.
- In another pan heat oil and splutter mustard seeds, add curry leaves dry red chillies and pour it over the curry prepared.
