Kootu Curry (Kadala Pachakaya Kootu Curry)

Kootu Curry Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Kadala/Chana Dal – ¾ cup
  • Raw banana – 2
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Ginger – 1 tsp (finely chopped)
  • Green chilli – 3-4
  • Salt

For grinding:

  • Grated Coconut – 1 ½ Cup
  • Dry Red chilli – 2
  • Shallots – 5
  • Jeera/Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves – few

For Seasoning:

  • Coconut Oil – 2 Tbsp
  • Mustards seeds – ½ tsp
  • Dry Red chilli – 2-3
  • Grated Coconut – 2 -3 Tbsp
  • Curry leaves – few

 

(Note: 1 Cup = 250 ml)

 

Method:

Soak chana dal in water for 5-6 hrs or overnight. Take soaked dal in a pressure cooker. Add enough water to cover the dal. Add green chilli, ginger, turmeric powder and salt. Pressure cook the same until its cooked. (I go for 4-5 whistles and wait for the steam to drop and open the cooker)

Take the ingredients for grinding and grind it well and keep it aside.

Remove the skin and chop banana into small pieces. Add it to the cooker with cooked chana dal. Cook until its soft ( I prefer it to be cooked well. So I go for one more whistle. Alternatively you can cook it without putting lid)

Add the grinded coconut mixture to the chana dal, raw banana mixture. Mix well and cook for another 5-6 mins and remove from stove

In another pan heat oil and splutter mustards seeds. Add dry red chilli and curry leaves. Add grated coconut and sauté until its light brown in color. Add it to the kootu curry prepared. Serve hot and Enjoy!!!!!
