Vattayappam

Vattayappam is one of the traditional snack commonly prepared by Kerala people. It can be used as a breakfast dish also. As this is a steamed dish, it is very healthy. We can easily prepare this using the same ingredients as that of appam (Quantity of ingredients and method is little different). Make a try and enjoy the delicious snack.

Ingredients:

  • Raw rice (pachari) – 2 cup
  • Cooked rice – 1 cup
  • Grated Coconut – ¾ cup
  • Yeast – ¼ tsp
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Oil

 

(Note: 1 Cup = 250 ml)

 

 

Method: (With Step-by-step pics)

Take raw rice (pacharai) in a deep bowl

 

Wash and soak raw rice in water for about 5-6 hours.

 

Then grind the raw rice, cooked rice, coconut and salt along with water. Grind it until it turns into a fine batter. Add yeast and sugar to the batter and stir it well.

 

Set aside the batter for about 5-6 hours (until the batter level rises). Then we can see the batter level has risen.

 

Pour some water in the steamer and put it for boiling. Apply little oil on the dish we are planning to pour the batter. Then pour the batter and wait until the water in the steamer is about to boil.

 

Then place the batter dish in the steamer and cook it for about 20 minutes.

 

To check whether it is properly cooked, insert a tooth pick and check whether it comes back clean. After it is done, remove the dish from steamer and allow it to cool.

 

Then cut it into pieces and serve.
