This is again a typical Kerala recipe and I love it because its hot and spicy. My mother always used to prepare it and in a similar way she used to prepare beef and tapioca also. Unfortunately here we don’t get good tapioca. I am just waiting to have it when I go to native.
Beef & Vazakka Olathiyathu Recipe
Ingredients:
- Beef – 500g (cut into small pieces)
- Raw banana – 2
- Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- Fennel seeds (Perumjeerakam) – ½ tsp
- Small onion – 6
- Green Chilli – 2
- Ginger garlic paste – 3 tsp
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Pepper powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Coriander powder – 4 tsp
- Garam masala – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – few
- Oil
- Salt
To Marinate
- Chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 2 tsp
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Lemon Juice – 1 tsp
- Salt
(Note: Vary the amount of chilli as per your spice level. 1 Cup = 250 ml)
Method:
- Cut raw banana into small pieces and cook the same (I usually pressure cook the same. Take raw banana add salt and 1/3 rd cup of water in a pressure cooker. Wait for 1 whistle and immediately remove from the stove. Don’t overcook banana)
- Mix all ingredients to marinate. Add little water and make it into a good paste.
- Add cut beef pieces and mix well.
- Don’t add water and pressure cook the marinated beef till beef is cooked well ( I go for 4-5 whistles)

- Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
- Add fennel seeds, sliced onion and curry leaves.
- When onion becomes soft add ginger garlic paste, green chilli and cook for 2-3 min.
- Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, garam masala, salt and cook for 2-3 min.(Sprinkle little water if it’s becoming dry)
- Add cooked beef and mix well
- When beef is almost 50% dry add cooked raw banana and mix
- Cook with the pan covered for 4-5 min
- Now remove the lid and cook in medium flame, by stirring in between till it’s almost 80% dry. Serve hot.
