Beef & Vazakka Olathiyathu ( Beef & Raw Banana Stir Fry, Kerala Recipe)

Beef & Vazakka Olathiyathu

This is again a typical Kerala recipe and I love it because its hot and spicy. My mother always used to prepare it and in a similar way she used to prepare beef and tapioca also. Unfortunately here we don’t get good tapioca. I am just waiting to have it when I go to native.

Beef & Vazakka Olathiyathu Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Beef – 500g (cut into small pieces)
  • Raw banana – 2
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Fennel seeds (Perumjeerakam) – ½ tsp
  • Small onion – 6
  • Green Chilli  – 2
  • Ginger  garlic paste – 3 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Pepper powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½  tsp
  • Coriander powder – 4 tsp
  • Garam masala – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Oil
  • Salt

To Marinate

  • Chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Lemon Juice – 1 tsp

Method:

  • Cut raw banana into small pieces and cook the same (I usually pressure cook the same. Take raw banana and 1/3 rd cup of water in a pressure cooker. Wait for 1 whistle and immediately remove from the stove. Don’t overcook banana)
  • Mix all ingredients to marinate. Add little water and make it into a good paste.
  • Add cut beef pieces and mix well.
  • Don’t add water and pressure cook the marinated beef till beef is cooked well ( I go for 4-5 whistles)

  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Add fennel seeds, sliced onion and curry leaves.

  • When onion becomes soft add ginger garlic paste, green chilli and cook for 2-3 min.
  • Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, garam masala, salt and cook for 2-3 min.(Sprinkle little water if it’s becoming dry)

  • Add cooked beef and mix well
  • When beef is almost 50% dry add cooked raw banana and mix

  • Cook with the pan covered for 4-5 min
  • Now remove the lid and cook in medium flame, by stirring in between till it’s almost 80% dry. Serve hot.
