Thoran is a must item of Kerala meals. Even if our meal is rich with non-veg items, still we need a thoran for its completion. Here it is a very simple method for preparing spinach stir fry /Cheera thoran.  Spinach is a rich source of vitamins and it is nutritious and can be prepared easily. Try it and enjoy with hot meals.


Easy Cheera Thoran/Spinach Stir Fry Recipe


  • Spinach/Cheera – 150 gm
  • Grated Coconut – ½ cup
  • Onion – 1 medium
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Turmeric powder – a pinch
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Salt
  • Oil


(Note: 1 Cup = 250 ml

Vary amount of chilli as per your spice level)



Method (With Step-by-step pics):


Take spinach.


Wash and drain it and chop it finely.


Mix it with coconut and salt using hands.


Heat little oil in a pan and add finely sliced onion, green chilly, curry leaves and a pinch of salt.


Saute until it becomes soft.


Then add turmeric powder and sauté for a minute.


Then add spinach – coconut mix and stir well.


Cover it with lid.


Continue cooking until it is cooked well. It will take less than 5 minutes. Stir in between.


Also check salt test in between and add salt if needed.


Serve hot.
